In qualifying, everything fell into place for Tom Coronel and ROAL Motorsport. At the moment when it mattered, the 45-year-old Dutchman managed to qualify in tenth place. In the reversed starting grid order for the opening race, that meant the DHL Pole Position, given the circumstances the best possible result for Coronel.

At the start of the formation lap, Tom Coronel had a poor getaway with his Chevrolet Cruze, but still got going in time to be allowed to take his pole position. After the starting lights went out, the yellow car again had difficulties in getting going and the Dutchman joined the field well down the order in twelfth place as a result. What was left for him was a thrilling battle with Yann Ehrlacher, John Filippi and, at the end of the race, also with Volvo driver Nicky Catsburg, who had dropped back. At the finish, Coronel saw his competitive efforts rewarded with an excellent sixth place.

In the main race, Tom Coronel had a better start and stayed around his tenth grid position. This time, he battled with Honda works driver Michigami and, once again, with John Filippi. After a brief safety car intervention halfway through the race, Tom Coronel continued his battle. A broken front splitter was making life difficult for him and an excursion in the second Lesmo made him loss one place to John Filippi. In both races, Tom Coronel at least scored valuable points for the WTCC Trophy. In the WTCC drivers’ standings, he is now tenth with 16 points.

Looking back upon the weekend, Tom Coronel reported: “In the free practice sessions, everything went well. The handling of the car was good and I felt comfortable. In qualifying, I really had to make an effort to get that tenth place. That went reasonably well and I was ninth. Only in the final minute, the driver in tenth place went slightly faster and I dropped to tenth. I realise that it sounds a bit strange, but that is what you want for the reversed starting grid. Moreover, it was also nice for my sponsor DHL that I was on the pole position that is sponsored by them. It is also the best grid position for the race, but that was where things started to go wrong. The starting system of our car is a story in itself. When that doesn’t work well, it is a nightmare. And that is what happened. At the moment when it counted, the engine played up and then you immediately drop back many places. Really annoying and definitely something we will have to work on. After that, I drove a nice race and made a good comeback with some spirited battles to finish sixth.”

He continues: “In race two, I had a slightly better getaway, but I started tenth. I didn’t really have a chance to attack, because I soon had a problem with the front splitter. I had a lot of understeer and did everything to survive. Another moment in Lesmo 2, where I completely went off the track, but was still able to continue. Eleventh place was all I could do, so I am happy with the points I have scored and I am now looking forward to the next races in Hungary. I have good memories of that place, so let’s hope that we can add some more there.”
