[:nl]Naast het nieuws dat Tom Coronel komend seizoen met een CUPRA in het FIA WTCR uitkomt, is er nog een noviteit. Rijders is door de organisatie gevraagd om, net als in de MotoGP (The Doctor voor Valentino Rossi), een bijnaam/nickname te bedenken.

“Kijk dat zijn natuurlijk altijd leuke dingen en voor mij was het niet zo heel erg moeilijk”, legt Tom Coronel uit. “Bij de overgang van de WTCC naar de huidige WTCR werd er door de organisatie een video gepresenteerd en daarin noemden ze mij ‘The Showman’. Daar kan ik prima mee leven. Ik ben eigenlijk altijd positief gestemd, extrovert en wel in voor wat gekkigheid. Maar dan wel met een serieuze ondertoon en ook dat past goed. Wanneer je via Google eens wat verder zoekt op ‘The Greatest Showman’ kom je bij iemand in een circus uit en ook daar liggen veel overeenkomsten. In mijn jeugdjaren ben ik veel opgetrokken met de mensen van Circus Toni Boltini. Dan zie je dat achter de lach voor het publiek het er ook heel serieus aan toe gaat. Dat is ook precies wat ik bedoel. Ik heb nu nog steeds iets met het circus. Thuis staan meerdere 1-wielers waar ik regelmatig op rijd, omdat het naar mijn idee bijdraagt aan een juist gevoel ‘in je kont’. Iets dat in de racerij enorm belangrijk is. Andere attributen die je in en om ons huis aantreft zijn een grote circusbal en een -koord, waarmee ik een juiste balans train. De ‘juggle sticks’ gebruik ik voor de oog-hand coördinatie en ook die is in de racerij altijd weer van groot belang. Daarmee is mijn link naar de gekozen nickname verklaard, maar moest er ook nog een gebruikelijke Tom Coronel video bijgemaakt worden. Alsof het zo moest zijn stond er voor ons een circustent en na goedkeuring ben ik samen met de videoman opnamen gaan maken. Het eindresultaat is inmiddels -zoals gebruikelijk- via de social media kanalen te bekijken en ik ben benieuwd naar de reacties. Overigens hebben we de bijnaam dit jaar gecombineerd met een nieuw logo en het nieuwe startnummer 50 (ter gelegenheid van het 50-jarig bestaan van DHL – red.), dat dit jaar ook op een passende manier ook op de overall staat en in vele van onze marketing uitingen naar buiten zal komen.”

Inmiddels bereidt Tom Coronel zich samen met het Belgische Comtoyou Racing voor op de komende FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). Na de eerste tests met de CUPRA op het vertrouwde Circuitpark Zandvoort bezoeken zij momenteel andere circuits in Europa om zo optimaal mogelijk aan de start van de eerste races te verschijnen. Deze staan voor het weekend van 5-7 april gepland in Marrakech Marokko.[:en]There is another novelty next to the news that Tom Coronel will be racing a CUPRA in the FIA WTCR in the upcoming season. The series’ organisers have asked the drivers to come up with a nickname like in MotoGP (‘The Doctor’ for Valentino Rossi).

“Things like these are fun and for me, it wasn’t too difficult,” Tom Coronel explains. “For the transition from the WTCC to the current WTCR, the organisers produced a video in which I was referred to as ‘The Showman’. I can perfectly live with that. Actually, I am always in a positive mood, extravert and always in for some fun, albeit with a serious note and that is fitting as well. When you search a little bit further on Google for ‘The greatest showman’, you find somebody from a circus and there are plenty of similarities there as well. In my youth, I spent a lot of time with the people from the Toni Boltini circus. There, you find out that there is some serious work behind the laughs that are seen in public. And that is exactly what I mean. I still have a sweet spot for anything related with circuses. At home, I have several unicycles that I ride on quite often because I think that it helps you develop the ‘seat of your pants’ feeling, something that is very important in racing. Other things you will found at our house are a huge circus ball and a circus rope that I use to train the right balance. I am using juggle sticks for my eye-to-hand co-ordination, yet another thing that is crucial in racing. That explains the link to my nickname, but sure enough, we had to produce a trademark Tom Coronel video to go with it. As if it was planned, we found a huge circus tent and after having been granted permission, the videographer and I recorded the video there. As usual, the final result is available to watch on the various social media channels and I am curious to see what people think of it. By the way, we also combined the nickname with a new logo and the new starting number 50 to commemorate DHL’s 50^th anniversary. These will also feature on my driver’s suit and in many of our marketing outlets this year.”

Currently, Tom Coronel and his Belgian team Comtoyou Racing are preparing for the upcoming FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). Following initial test sessions with the CUPRA at his familiar Zandvoort circuit, Coronel and his team are now visiting other circuits in Europe to be well prepared for the first races of the season. These are scheduled to take place in Marrakech in Morocco, 5-7 April.[:]
