[:nl]Nürburg, 14 mei 2018 – De hoogtepunten volgen elkaar in een indrukwekkend tempo op in het FIA WTCR by Oscaro. Afgelopen week waren er drie races in het voorprogramma van de 24-uursrace op de Nürburgring-Nordschleife voor niet minder dan 210.000 bezoekers, komend weekeinde al wordt de toerwagenstrijd voortgezet tijdens de Jumbo Racedagen driven by Max Verstappen op Circuit Zandvoort. Ook hier wordt een indrukwekkend aantal bezoekers verwacht. Tom Coronel, die in het FIA WTCR uitkomt met een Honda Civic Type R TCR van het Belgische team Boutsen Ginion Racing, scoorde op de Nürburgring in alle drie de races punten voor het kampioenschap. Daarmee komt hij extra gemotiveerd naar Zandvoort, waar hij voor eigen publiek natuurlijk weer goed voor de dag wil komen.

Na het optreden in Hongarije werd de Honda door de technici van Boutsen Ginion stevig onder handen genomen, om de Nederlander nog meer kans op kampioenschapspunten te geven. Voor de eerste race in Duitsland resulteerde dat in een mooie zevende startpositie. Na de start kwam Tom goed door de hectische eerste bochtencombinatie, maar had op de lange stukken net te weinig snelheid om de strijd echt aan te kunnen. Desondanks wist hij de achterstand te beperken en eindigde als negende. Zaterdagochtend volgde de tweede race, die voor de Honda-coureur op een dertiende plaats begon. Ook nu waren de eerste bochten van cruciaal belang om de posities in het veld te bepalen. De geel/rode Civic handhaafde zich sterk en positioneerde zich na de eerste ronde op de elfde plaats, om in de navolgende ronde nog een plek te winnen. Na een tijdstraf bij een van de andere rijders kwam er nog een plaats winst bij. Het FIA-WTCR-slotstuk op de Nordschleife begon voor de Nederlander nogmaals op de dertiende plaats. In de beginfase was er voor en rond Coronel veel strijd en hij verloor een plaatsje. In het stuk er na op de ‘Grüne Hölle’ gebeurde genoeg op meerdere plaatsen in het veld. Een ronde later pakte de Nederlander een plaats terug, waarbij het meest hectische nog moest komen. Onder de uitvallers in de Top 10 bevonden zich tijdens de slotronde de voor Tom rijdende Rob Huff en Norbert Michelisz. Zij raakten elkaar en kwamen op de baan tot stilstand. Juist op het moment dat de Honda van de Nederlander plankgas op twee wielen door die bocht kwam. Hard remmen en snel sturen hielpen Coronel om zonder schade te passeren en daarmee twee plaatsen winst te boeken en voor de derde keer dit raceweekend een Top 10-klassering veilig te stellen. Daarmee staat de teller nu op 8 punten. Een goed resultaat nu de volgende races, komend weekend al, op het vertrouwde Circuit Zandvoort plaatsvinden.

Na afloop verklaarde Tom Coronel: “Wat blijft dit toch een absoluut fantastisch circuit. Hoewel je de bochten inmiddels redelijk goed kent, blijft het toch iedere ronde weer anders. Terugkijkend op het geheel ben ik redelijk tevreden met hoe het ging. De Honda was absoluut beter, maar kwam op de lange rechte stukken nog steeds wat snelheid te kort. Je voelt je soms ‘a sitting duck’, als je ziet met welke snelheidsverschillen bijvoorbeeld de Audi’s je passeren. Aan de andere kant kan ik door de baankennis ook weer veel goedmaken. Zeker in de twee laatste races wist ik in het bochtige deel voldoende voorsprong op te bouwen, waardoor het voor anderen moeilijk werd om mij voor de streep nog in te halen. Verder was het echt lekker racen, met hier en daar een beetje hangen, trekken en duwen. Allerbelangrijkste was om kampioenschapspunten te pakken en dat is in alle drie de races gelukt. Soms kreeg ik er door het handelen van anderen en de bestraffing daarvan er zelfs nog een punt extra bij.

In de laatste race had ik problemen met het schakelen en verloor net te veel snelheid om de aansluiting te houden. Hopen dat we ook dat voor komend weekend in Zandvoort helemaal voor elkaar hebben. Verder blijf ik er bij dat dit een supercompetitief kampioenschap is. Dat zie je al in de kwalificaties, waar de verschillen echt miniem zijn. Verder moet je in de races ook af en toe wat geluk hebben, want het zit soms wel heel dicht op elkaar. Kijk naar Tarquini en in die laatste race de actie tussen Rob Huff en Norbie. Echt, dan moet alles goed gaan om daar zonder schade tussendoor te rijden. Dat geluk had ik, maar het hart moest wel even overuren draaien. Nu met het team alles in orde maken voor het komend weekend op Circuit Zandvoort. Ik heb er echt zin in! Zeker omdat er ook zoveel mensen naar toe komen. Laten we hopen dat we de goede lijn van dit weekend dan voort kunnen zetten, de nodige punten kunnen pakken en wie weet een podium!”

 [:en]Nürburg, 15 May, 2018 – One highlight is chasing the next in the FIA WTCR by Oscaro season. Last week, three races were held on the support package of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in front of no less than 210,000 spectators. This weekend, touring car action continues during the Jumbo Racing Days driven by Max Verstappen at Circuit Zandvoort in The Netherlands. Here, too, an impressive crowd is expected. Tom Coronel, who is racing a Honda Civic Type R TCR run by Belgian team, Boutsen Ginion Racing, in the FIA WTRC, managed to score championship points in all three races at the Nürburgring. Thus, he is extra motivated for Zandvoort where he wants to shine again in front of his home crowd.

After the races in Hungary, the Boutsen Ginion technicians worked hard on the Honda in order to improve their Dutch driver’s chances to score championship points. This resulted into a good seventh place on the grid for the first race in Germany.

After the start, Tom Coronel made it through the usual frenzy of the first corners, but slightly lacked the speed to be really competitive on the straights. Nevertheless, he kept the damage limited and was ninth across the line. For the second race of the meeting on Saturday morning, the Honda driver was 13^th on the grid. Once again, the first corners were crucial to determine the positions in the field. The yellow and red Honda made its mark and was eleventh after the opening lap, moving up once place further ahead on the next tour. A time penalty for another driver meant one more position gained for Coronel. The third and final FIA WTCR race at the Nordschleife saw Coronel again in 13^th place on the grid. In the opening stages of the race, there were many battles around him and he lost one position. Later on in the ‘Green Hell’, there was plenty of action throughout the field. On lap two, Coronel gained one position, but the most frenetic action was yet to come. On the final lap, retirements from the top ten included Rob Huff and Norbert Michelisz, who were both in front of Coronel. The two collided and came to a halt on track, at the very moment when the Dutchman’s Honda arrived flat-out on two wheels through the corner. Hard braking and quick steering action helped Coronel to make his way through without any damage. Thus, he gained two places and scored the third top ten result from as many races this weekend. As a result, he now has eight points in the championship. A good result with the next round already scheduled for this weekend at his familiar Circuit Zandvoort.

Tom Coronel commented afterwards: “This is and will always remain an absolutely fantastic circuit. Even though I know the corners reasonably well by now, every lap is still always different. Looking back upon the weekend, I am quite happy with the way things were going. The Honda was definitely better, but still lacked some speed on the straights. Sometimes I felt like a sitting duck when I saw the difference in speed, for instance when the Audis overtook me. On the other hand, my knowledge of the track enabled me to make up for it to a great extent. Especially in the last two races, I was able to pull a gap in the twisty part that was enough to make it difficult for the others to still overtake me. It was also really nice racing with some contact, pushing and pulling. The important thing for me was to score championship points, which is what I did in all three races. Sometimes, I got an extra point by actions from others and penalties as a result of it.

In the final race, I had some gearshift issues and lost just a little bit too much speed to be able to keep up. Let’s hope that we can get that sorted in time for this weekend at Zandvoort. Like I have said before, this championship is super competitive. That already becomes clear in qualifying where the gaps are minimal. In the races, you sometimes need a little bit of luck as well because it is really close at times. Look at what happened to Tarquini and the incident between Rob Huff and Norbi in the final race. In such cases, everything has to work out well if you want to make it through without damage. I had that luck, but my heart was in the limiter there. Now we will get everything in place for this weekend at Circuit Zandvoort, an event I am really looking forward to! Especially as there will be so many people coming. Let’s hope that we will be able to continue the good performance of the Nürburgring, score some points and, who knows, perhaps even a podium finish!”
