[:nl]Huizen, 26 februari 2019 – Begin april start de tweede jaargang van de FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) presented by Oscaro in Marokko. Binnen het aansprekende internationale deelnemersveld, dat zich voor komend seizoen heeft ingeschreven, prijkt ook nu de naam van Tom Coronel. De ervaren 46-jarige coureur uit ‘t Gooi, die komend racejaar van start gaat met de door het Belgische Comtoyou Racing ingeschreven CUPRA.

“De contacten met het team dateren van eind vorig jaar”, vertelt Tom Coronel. “Na de races op Macau kwam ik in gesprek met Kurt Mollekens. Mijn oud-teamgenoot tijdens de Euroseries Opel Lotus en momenteel engineer bij Comtoyou Racing uit het Belgische Waterloo. Dat gesprek zette mij aan het denken en na de nodige contacten met het team, onder leiding van François Verbist en Jean-Michel Baert kwam ik tot een goede afspraak voor het komend seizoen. Daarbij speelde de oud teammanager van het SEAT WTCC Team, Jaime Puig, ook een belangrijke rol. Met SEAT heb ik in de jaren de nodige successen in de CUPRA behaald. Jaime speelt nu een rol bij CUPRA en gaf voor mij de doorslag om hier voor te kiezen. Het gaat hier om auto’s die in Spanje bij CUPRA gebouwd zijn en die door Comtoyou Racing gefinetuned worden. Ieder raceweekend zal er ook een monteur van CUPRA aanwezig zijn. Verder zijn er de nodige testdagen in het contract opgenomen, waarvan de eerste op 27 en 28 februari. Dan rijd ik met een -dan nog witte- CUPRA op Zandvoort. Uiteindelijk zal de auto de bekende gele kleur krijgen en het startnummer voor komend seizoen is ’50’. Daarmee wil ik DHL als sponsor extra in het zonnetje zetten, want zij bestaan dit jaar precies 50 jaar en dit leek mij een mooie geste. Verder zijn alle sponsors van vorig jaar gebleven, waardoor ook de rest van de auto voor iedereen herkenbaar zal zijn. Dat geldt ook voor de tweede -eveneens gele- auto van het team, die bestuurd zal worden door Aurélien Panis”, aldus Coronel aan de vooravond van de eerste testritten.

Jaime Puig, verantwoordelijk voor de sportactiviteiten van het merk CUPRA, verklaart: “Ik ben blij dat Tom Coronel heeft gekozen voor CUPRA en ik hoop dat we samen weer voor mooie resultaten kunnen zorgen. Tom ken ik al sinds zijn start in het toerwagenracen in 2001, hij heeft toen al meerdere jaren voor ons merk gereden. Zijn eerste overwinning in het WTCC behaalde hij met een SEAT in 2008 in Okayama. Hier gebruikte Tom een speciale bandencombinatie, slicks voor en regenbanden achter. Dat zal ik nooit meer vergeten!  Zoiets moet hij dit jaar maar weer eens herhalen.”

François Verbist, technicus met decennialange ervaring en tal van successen in de autosport, is teammanager van Comtoyou Racing en stelt: “Ik ben blij dat een ervaren toerwagencoureur als Tom voor ons team heeft gekozen. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat we samen mooie resultaten kunnen neerzetten.”

Voor wat betreft de vooruitzichten hoopt Coronel uiteraard dit jaar toch weer op het podium te staan. “Na het afgelopen jaar moet het toch lukken om weer een keer ‘a moment of fame’ te pakken. Het zal niet makkelijk zijn, want dit jaar keren er natuurlijk vele grote rijders van weleer in het kampioenschap terug. Aan de andere kant heb ik veel vertrouwen in de auto plus het team en laten we hopen dat het geluk dit jaar ook weer een keer mijn kant op valt. Zeker door de vroege en goede voorbereiding, maar ook het jaar ervaring in het WTCR, moet het toch weer een keer lukken om de strijd om de podiumplaatsen aan te gaan. Het zal zeker niet makkelijk zijn, de concurrentie is sterk, maar we hebben 10 raceweekenden, met ieder drie races om het te bewijzen. Hopen dat we uit de schade blijven en de strijd aan kunnen gaan. Aan mij zal het niet liggen. Ik heb er zin in! Eat My Dust ehhh Cheese! ”

 [:en]Huizen, 26 February 2019 – The second season of the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) presented by Oscaro gets underway in Morocco at the beginning of April. Now, the international field of highly-rated drivers registered for the upcoming season also includes Tom Coronel. The experienced 46-year-old driver from the Netherlands will be racing a CUPRA entered by Belgian outfit, Comtoyou Racing this season.

“My contact with the team started at the end of last year,” Tom Coronel tells. “After the races at Macau, I spoke with Kurt Mollekens. He is a former teammate of mine in the Opel Lotus Euroseries and currently is an engineer at Comtoyou Racing from Waterloo in Belgium. Our conversation got me thinking and after some discussions with the team led by François Verbist and Jean-Michel Baert, we made a good deal for the upcoming season. Jaime Puig, the former team manager of the SEAT WTCC team, also played an important role in the process. With SEAT, I have had quite some success behind the wheel of the CUPRA. Jaime is now involved with CUPRA and was the decisive factor in making me chose this option. The cars are being built at the CUPRA headquarters in Spain and are fine-tuned by Comtoyou Racing. Every weekend, a CUPRA technician will be present. The contract also includes some test days, the first of them on 27 and 28 February when I will be driving a CUPRA at Zandvoort, albeit still with a plain white livery. Eventually, the car will get its familiar yellow colour and my starting number for the upcoming season is 50. With that number, I want to put DHL as a sponsor in the limelight as they are celebrating their 50^th anniversary this year and this seemed like a nice gesture to me. All the other sponsors from last year remained involved, so the rest of the car will also be a familiar sight for everyone. That can also be said about the second car, also yellow, to be driven by Aurélien Panis,” Tom Coronel says on the eve of the first test days.

Jaime Puig: “I am delighted that Tom Coronel has chosen CUPRA and I hope that we can achieve some nice results together again. I have known Tom since he started racing touring cars in 2001, he raced for our brand for several years already. He scored his maiden victory with a SEAT at Okayama back in 2008. There, Tom had a special mix of tyres, slicks on the front wheels and rain tyres on the rear wheels. I will never forget that! That is something he could repeat this year.”

François Verbist: “I am glad that an experienced touring car driver like Tom has chosen our team. I am convinced that we can score some really good results together.”

As for his expectations, Coronel leaves no doubt about the fact that he wants to be on the podium again this year. “After last season, it should be possible to enjoy the occasional ‘moment of fame’. It will not be easy as many famous drivers from the past will be making their return to the championship. On the other hand, I have a lot of confidence in the car and in the team and let’s hope that I will have luck on my side again this year. Especially with the early and thorough preparation, but also with one year of WTCR experience, it should be possible for me to compete for podium finishes on occasion. It will not be easy, opposition is strong, but we have ten race weekends with three races each to make it happen. Let’s hope we can steer clear from any damage and can be competitive.
