[:nl]Tom Coronel geniet van iedere kilometer tijdens FIA-WTCC races op Nürburgring-Nordschleife

Nürburg, 27 mei 2017 – Voor Tom Coronel is het racen op de ruim 25 kilometer lange Nürburgring, met zijn 64 bochten, altijd weer een uitdaging. Wie de Nederlander in de Chevrolet Cruze TC1 van ROAL Motorsport via de onboardcamera’s volgt, houdt af en toe echt het hart vast. Bocht na bocht soms met flinke hoogteverschillen, een jump, diverse soorten wegdek, hoge snelheden, een heuse carrousel en slipstreamen waar het kan, zijn de ingrediënten van dit circuit. Tom Coronel reed in zijn lange carrière ontelbare ronden op deze vermaarde racepiste, beter bekend als ‘De Groene Hel’.

Het groene decor voor de zevende race van het FIA WTCC 2017, die voor de Nederlander ook op een zevende plaats begint. Na de start settelt het veld zich en ruim 8 minuten later komen de rijders voor de eerste maal over start -finish. De tiende plaats is voor de ROAL Motorsport Chevy. Een derde van de race-afstand zit er op en er volgen nog twee ronden. In de eerste daarvan strijdt Coronel met een van de fabrieks-Volvo’s om de negende plek. Gebaseerd op zijn jarenlange ervaring, weet Tom echter dat de laatste raceronde de meest bepalende is, vanwege de hoge buitentemperatuur en de invloed die dat op de banden heeft. Voor hem kampen meerdere rijders met rubberproblemen (net als Tom zelf vorig jaar) en zo verzekert de ROAL Motorsport coureur zich van een strakke en probleemloze achtste plaats.

Race 8 begint voor Tom Coronel weer op de zevende plaats, die hij na een sterke start ook weet te behouden. Hij houdt zo ook aansluiting met de auto’s voor hem. In de slotronde meldt Guerrieri zich aan de achterbumper en enkele bochten lang gaan de beide Chevy-coureurs het  gevecht met elkaar aan. Tot op de meet blijft het spannend, maar het is Tom Coronel die als beste van de twee over de lijn gaan en als zevende eindigt.

Tom Coronel na afloop: “Vorig jaar ben ik nog niet vergeten. Toen verknalde een klapband een zekere podiumplaats en was de schade groot. Met die wetenschap begon ik aan dit weekend. In de kwalificaties ging het er ruig en goed aan toe en ik was dik tevreden met mijn auto. Alles voelde goed aan en wanneer je realistisch bent is die zevende positie ook de plek waar ik met deze auto normaal gesproken thuishoor. De start van de eerste race ging compleet de mist in. Door een elektronische storing in het startsysteem had ik het gaspedaal op de bodem liggen, maar nauwelijks snelheid. Zo verloor ik kostbare plaatsen. Verder liep alles lekker en kon ik mijn eigen race rijden. Een gevecht gehad met Nick Catsburg, maar zijn Volvo was sterker en in de slotronde zag ik rijders voor mij in de problemen komen met de banden. Dus veilig uitgereden en punten gepakt. In de tweede race kwam ik een stuk beter weg en kon mijn plek behouden. In de beginfase kreeg ik nog een tik van Michigami, maar hield daar weinig schade aan over. Genoten van de race en mijn positie behouden. In de slotronde ging het linksvoor wat trillen dus iets rustiger aan gedaan, waardoor Guerrieri dichterbij, maar er niet voorbij kwam. Een probleemloze, solide, veilige race dus en nogmaals punten voor het Wereldkampioenschap. Daarmee konden we op een goede manier de 60e verjaardag van teambaas Roberto Ravaglia vieren. En op naar volgend weekend voor de volgende TCR-race met de Honda Civic op het Circuit van Zolder en de volgende race FIA WTCC race is in Villa Real.”[:en]Tom Coronel enjoys every kilometre in FIA WTCC races at Nürburgring-Nordschleife

Nürburg, 27 May, 2017 – For Tom Coronel, racing at the more than 25 kilometres long Nürburgring with its 64 corners always is a challenge. Anyone following the Dutchman in the ROAL Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze TC1 via the onboard cameras, will really hold his breath every now and then. Corner after corner, sometimes with considerable inclines or drops, a jump, different surfaces, high speed, a real carrousel and slipstreaming when and wherever possible are the ingredients of this circuit. Throughout his long career, Tom Coronel has driven countless laps of this renowned race track, better known as ‘The Green Hell’.

The green backdrop for the seventh race of the 2017 FIA WTCC season, in which the Dutchman suitably starts from seventh place on the grid. After the start, positions are sorted and some eight minutes later, the drivers cross the start and finish line for the first time. The ROAL Motorsport Chevrolet is in tenth place. One third of the race distance has been completed, two more laps are to follow. In the first of them, Coronel is battling for ninth place with one of the works-Volvos. Based on his many years of experience, Coronel knows that the final lap of the race is the most crucial, also because of the high air temperature and the effect that has on the tyres. In front of him, several drivers have to cope with tyre issues, just like Coronel himself one year earlier, and thus, the ROAL Motorsport driver secures himself an undisputed and trouble-free eighth place.

The eighth race of the season again starts from seventh place on the grid for Tom Coronel, a position that he manages to hold on to after a strong start. Thus, he can also keep up with the cars in front of him. On the final lap, Guerrieri shows up right behind him and the two Chevrolet drivers battle for a few corners. The duel remains thrilling till the end, but it is Coronel who is the first of the two across the line to finish seventh.

Tom Coronel afterwards: “Last year was still in my mind. Back then, I lost a certain podium finish because of a tyre failure and I had a lot of damage. Based on that knowledge, I started my weekend. Qualifying was tough, but good, and I was really happy with my car. Everything handled well and realistically, seventh place is where I normally belong with this car. The start of the first race went completely wrong. An electronic gremlin in the starting system meant that my throttle pedal was on the floor, but I hardly had any speed. Thus, I lost valuable positions. For the rest, everything went fine and I was able to drive my own race. I had a battle with Nick Catsburg, but his Volvo was stronger and on the final lap, I saw drivers getting into trouble with the tyres in front of me. I safely brought it home and secured the points. In the second race, my start was considerably better and I was able to hold on to my position. In the early stages, Michigami hit me, but that didn’t cause a lot of damage. I enjoyed the race and defended my position. On the final lap, I had some vibrations on the left front wheel, so I backed off a bit, which allowed Guerrieri to close up, but I still kept him at bay. I trouble-free, solid and safe race, therefore, and once again world championship points. That was a good way to celebrate the 60^th anniversary of our team principal Roberto Ravaglia. And now, it is on to the next TCR round with the Honda Civic at Zolder next weekend and then the next FIA WTCC event, which is at Vila Real.”[:]
